Role in the fight
VF-172 guards the carrier group from a distance. We fly combat air patrol and long-range intercepts to deal with threats before they get close.
Flying the F-14B in DCS
The Tomcat needs two crew, a pilot and a RIO. The RIO runs the AWG-9 radar and the AIM-54 Phoenix while the pilot flies the jet. It takes practice to get the crew working smoothly.

Flying with the VF-172
The squadron leans toward the mil-sim end of the spectrum.
VF-172 flies combat air patrol in the F-14B, with strike, intercept, escort, reconnaissance, and red air alongside it. The squadron is airborne at least every other day, working CAP on every flight and carrier operations on most, and any qualification is open to a member who pursues it. New pilots are expected to arrive ready to learn.
